It is the last frontier, a place where wild dominates human kind. A place known as the land of the midnight sun, here alpenglow lasts for hours, not minutes. Imagine venturing into this wilderness where the bears do not fear humans, where the minimal human population has learned and adapted to live in harmony with them. The bears rule, not only because they are strong, large, and on the top of their food chains, but because the humans believe that they should. Now imagine being able to capture photos of these magnificent creatures from 15 feet away. This is Alaska!

Art and Jay are leading an exclusive workshop/tour to a private lodge in Lake Clark National Park, established to protect a pristine ecosystem of volcanoes, coastal beaches, waterfalls, and rivers teaming with wildlife. You will have the opportunity to photograph Alaskan brown bears, bald eagles, auks, kittiwakes, murres, puffins, and cormorants, to name a few, as well as landscapes to which you will surrender your soul. You will experience all of this while eating extraordinary food on a sun-lit deck with bears grazing below you. You can be one of only 10 people to learn the nuances of nature photography taught in a truly wild atmosphere by a well-versed set of instructors.

This workshop experience is unique in that you will learn from Art’s world-renowned creative approach to photographing nature, as well as Jay’s extensive photography experience and insight with technology and equipment. All aspects of outdoor photography will be covered, including composition, field techniques, technology, and the unique philosophy of this highly specialized profession. There will be informative lectures, rigorous critiques and portfolio reviews. Instead of concentrating only on f-stops and equipment, we will work on composition, imagination, and the control of every element in the image. We do more than just take you to the location; we help you to maximize your creative and technological skills as a photographer.

Utilizing his formal training as a teacher, Art will work closely with participants to ensure they come away with new skills and tangible experience in the field as well as inspiration to take their photography to the next level. Throughout this entire course there will be ample opportunity to photograph the bears. Shooting schedules can be altered to effectively cater to the photographic desires of the group.

Itinerary:
All mornings include a breakfast at 8am. Each day includes a lunch at 1pm as well as a dinner at 7pm.

Day 1 – Monday, 30th July
Arrive at the lodge around 10:30am from Anchorage then spend some time getting acquainted with the lodge and learning about conduct around the bears. This area at this time of year will be very lively with bear activity. Hopefully time will allow for some photographing before dinner and – if weather allows – time for an evening shoot back in the field (media lessons taught if the weather doesn’t allow for outdoor activities).

Day 2 – Tuesday, 31st July
This day will be spent in the field with a boat trip to the puffin rookery where a myriad of seabirds such as the puffins, kittiwakes, oystercatchers, murres, etc. can be found. The evening consists of either more time in the field or an indoor workshop.

Day 3 – Wednesday, 1st August
this day starts with a boat tour down the beautiful coastline to photograph Mt. Iliamna or a canoe trip on a local lake full of water lilies. Again, an after-dinner field time or workshop will round off your day.

Day 4 – Thursday, 2nd August
Schedule permitting, spend some time in the field during the early morning shooting bears at sunrise, return to the lodge mid-morning to return to Anchorage.

The course fee covers all instruction.
